Musical Futures: Transition

The videos below are taken from our Primary transition: "Play Day" which was organised by my fantastic colleague Jo Watson and took place last week. Students in our feeder primary schools had been working on the song "Stand By Me" using lesson plans and resources provided by Jo. The notation is available as a link at the bottom of this post, and was kindly arranged on our behalf by Alex T Y Au, an undergraduate.

The idea was to capitalise on the wider opps and peripatetic tuition happening, and to use the enthusiasm and skill of the music coordinators in the primary schools.

There was also an opportunity to introduce the children to our staff, our students and our Musical Futures pedagogy, based on learning aurally through "informal learning" and "non-formal teaching", and also to build a sense of belonging to the school by working together for the day on our premises.

Students will pick up where they left off in September by using classroom workshops to refine their performance of "Stand By Me" with a segue into "Beautiful Girl" by Sean Kingston, leading to a whole class composition using either the chords or riff as a stimulus.

I have included the lesson plan for their first 75 minute session in September too.

I couldn't be happier with how the day went and am so grateful to Jo in particular but to everyone involved and can't wait to work with these students in September.

Thanks to Emily Segal for the arrangment
