Permanent Revolution

I have to admit to a secret admiration for Genki Sudo's group World Order. True, they have a very limited range both musically and choreographically, but it is uniquely theirs and I always find it interesting. Genki Sudo, by the way, is a retired mixed martial arts champion, which is where some of the disciplined choreography comes from. At the end of every match he would hold up a banner saying "WE ARE ALL ONE". World Order continues this thought. What is impressive about the choreography is the unity of it. I don't believe any special effects are used, by the way. It is all just controlled movement because they also do these moves live. But I'm a little puzzled how they got that floating effect at the end of their latest video. Have a look and see what you think:

UPDATE: You did notice that at the end, after the music is over, there is a final scene where a fellow who looks like he works for the CIA comes into the deserted conference room where the agreement was just reached and picks up that mysterious piece of paper which reads "we are all one". Right?

Asian Pop!

Occasionally while doing my "catty micro-reviews" I have run across pop artists from Asia: sometimes interesting, sometimes bizarre (at least relative to what we are used to). But there is one viral South Korean video that is worth having a look at. Psy with Gangnam Style!

As of this morning, that is up to over 250,000,000 views on YouTube! On first viewing it seems like something from another universe, but it gets funnier after a couple of viewings and you may, as I did, find yourself calling out "Gangnam Style!" and cackling maniacally for no good reason. This is a kind of humor that music is particularly good at. Think Robin Williams at his most manic. Not to everyone's taste? You bet!

For a different kind of Asian pop music, have a look at this Japanese video:

The leader, Genki Sudo, is a retired martial arts champion. He writes the songs and creates the choreography. No special effects, by the way, they just do all those moves.
